WHAT TO SPECIFY
Pulses are graded visually as much as analytically, which is exactly why the contract needs to be precise. Screen size or calibre, foreign matter, splits, moisture and colour are the headings that decide whether a cargo is accepted, and each of them needs a number rather than an adjective.
Most pulse shipments move containerised, which makes the packing and lot marking part of the specification rather than an afterthought. Where the buyer is a processor, the sample drawn at loading is usually retained by both sides.
Before you contract
- Screen size or calibre stated in millimetres
- Foreign matter, splits and moisture limits agreed
- Colour and appearance described against a retained sample
- Packing, lot marking and container stuffing method specified
- Phytosanitary and fumigation requirements confirmed at origin
